Health & Safety: Jermyn Street Jubilee Street Fete

Background

In addition to the many other Jubilee celebrations OPS took part in this year, we were able to work alongside We Are Placemaking and The Crown Estate to safely deliver the Jermyn Street Jubilee Street Fete. The event saw an impressive range of activities for the public to enjoy, from demonstrations by local retailers, to exciting entertainment from various acts on the custom built Union Jack stage. The aim of the event was to encourage local retailers to demonstrate their products, services, and engage with the participating audience.

OPS provided a range of H&S services for this event, including the creation of pre-event documentation, supplier auditing, close liaison with Westminster City Council, and on-site safety presence throughout the build, live and break periods.

Challenges

  • Similarly to some of our other events occurring over the same Jubilee weekend, the build, live and break had to safely be facilitated within the one day. Due to the tight time frames presented, this consequently raised the potential issue of suppliers and contractors not placing safety at the forefront of their operations. It was therefore important that a robust safety plan was implemented by the OPS and WAP team, and followed by all suppliers and contractors involved.

  • Furthermore, it was important to ensure staff welfare was maintained, which was facilitated through regular breaks, staff rotation and available toilets, drinking water and food throughout.

  • In addition to working alongside Westminster City Council to ensure overall compliance with the Temporary Event Notice, We Are OPS were tasked with liaising with a wide range of local retailers and partners involved, to effectively align safety procedures, and compile all relevant documentation prior to arrival on-site.

  • As well as the activities taking place on Jermyn Street, The Crown Estate also requested the installation of a 4m x 2m LED screen in St James Market. This therefore required the review of a structural engineers report, noting the wind, weight loading, and structural specifications of the screen. The area also had to be suitably and sufficiently barriered off to ensure public segregation.
