Health and Safety: Brookfield Hexagon Activation – City Point, London

Background

Brookfield Properties is a highly respected London based developer. In the summer of 2022, We Are Ops supported the We Are Placemaking team on an activation project at Brookfield’s City Point location in Central London.

The activation comprised a giant chess board, skittles alley as well as specially designed seating areas and planters.

A Safety Officer from We Are Ops was on site throughout the build and break of the project and made regular visits throughout the live activation to ensure its integrity and safety.

Challenges

• The location of the activation was a very busy business district of Central London, on the plaza of a large office building with high footfall. With this in mind , and both the build and break taking place during the working day, a suitable and secure site perimeter was built before any work took place. This was continually monitored by an OPS Safety Officer. Vehicles delivering to site across the plaza were escorted by a minimum of two crew with the support of City Point Security.

• OPS also provided advance support to We Are Placemaking in the design of the seating. Once the seating had been installed on site, the Safety Advisor completed a dynamic risk assessment and recommended adjustments to improve stability. OPS came together with WAP’s Production Manager and Creatives to discuss the best possible solutions, and additional works were agreed.

Delivery

• The safe and successful delivery of the project demonstrated great teamwork between We Are Placemaking and We Are Ops, as well as the cooperation of the designers engaged by the placemakers. Issues with the design and/or manufacture of an integral part of the activation were able to be resolved quickly and with minimal delay to the opening.

• The build and break saw minimal disruption to the area and the hugely successful activation was of great interest and remained in place throughout the summer months.
